I have a confession to make.
I have a bit of a crush on a guy who lives in my building. We’ve spoken a few times — usually at moments when I haven’t washed my hair in a few days, when I’m stumbling home drunk, or after I’ve been for a ride on my bike and am dripping with sweat and am bright red in the face. Once, I ran into him in the laundry room when I’d run out of clean clothes and was wearing a fluff-covered pair of track pants and a Care Bears t-shirt.
He hasn’t really seen me at my best, but I’m smitten nonetheless.
When I was thinking about a setting for my story for URL Love, ‘M@tchmaker,’ I decided that it would be best if I followed the ‘write what you know’ advice and wrote a story about a girl — Rose — who has a crush on her neighbour. Rose, like me, is a bit hopeless and keeps embarrassing herself in front of him.
In real life, I’ve never quite managed to stop embarrassing myself in front of my neighbour. But, without giving too much away, in the story it does kind of work out for Rose.
Secretly (well, not so secretly now), I’m hoping that real life, as awkward as it is, will emulate my fiction. And in strange ways it already kind of has. Take the fact that I accidentally found out my neighbour’s name. And when ‘M@tchmaker’ came back from the editor, I realised that unwittingly, I had used the neighbour’s real name in the story (this has now been changed). Or, the fact that the story starts with Rose having a chicken schnitzel at a pub lunch and spilling gravy on her white dress. Today, I went out for a pub lunch. It was a lunch that we planned weeks ago and I’ve been looking forward to having a chicken schnitzel and gravy since it was booked in. Of course when I left the office to go to the lunch today, I realised that like Rose, I’d worn a white dress.
Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately), I managed not to spill gravy on my dress today. But maybe that means that I’m also going to be crushing on my neighbour for a while longer.
M@tchmaker is just one of the fun, sexy, sassy stories that you can find in the URL Love digital anthology. URL Love goes on sale Monday, 17 September. Visit www.facebook.com/urllove1 for more information.
P.S. I promise to write a follow-up post if I ever do get a date with my neighbour.
